Lewis and Clark Journals
Clark: “Encountered a band of Sioux today on the banks of the Yellowstone. Capt. Lewis, in an act of unsettling behavior, responded with shouts of ‘Hide yo’ kids! Hide yo’ wife!’ much to our embarrassment and to the confusion of the Sioux. We retreated hurriedly back to our pirogues, lest we be met with a hail of arrows. Will try to remedy this tomorrow with the startled Sioux party. Meantime, treating Lewis with several drams of laudanum.”
